We wanted to share the recent Microsoft External User definition update. Microsoft made an update to the definition of "External Users" that better reflects modern work environments and provides clear guidelines for licensing requirements. Currently, the term "External Users" refers to users that are not employees, onsite contractors or onsite agents of Customer or its Affiliates. Effective October 1, 2024, "External Users" will be modified for products that include External Users use rights in product terms. The new definition will refer to users that are not (a) employees of Customer or its Affiliates, (b) contractors or agents that typically work for Customer or its Affiliates for more than 30 hours on average per week, or (c) contractors or agents that typically work onsite for Customer or its Affiliates on each working day.

March 2021

Microsoft:

Microsoft has released patches for multiple different on-premises Microsoft Exchange Server zero-day vulnerabilities that are being exploited by a nation-state affiliated group. The vulnerabilities exist in on-premises Exchange Servers 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019. We ask that you help drive immediate remediation steps.

For on-premises Exchange Servers, we ask that you direct your teams to start immediate action to assess your Exchange infrastructure and patch vulnerable servers, with the first priority being servers which are accessible from the Internet (e.g., servers publishing Outlook on the web/OWA and ECP). To patch these vulnerabilities, you should move to the latest Exchange Cumulative Updates and then install the relevant security updates on each Exchange Server. You can use the Exchange Server Health Checker script, which can be downloaded from GitHub (use the latest release). Running this script will tell you if you are behind on your on-premises Exchange Server updates (note that the script does not support Exchange Server 2010).

We also recommend that your security team assess whether or not the vulnerabilities were being exploited by using the Indicators of Compromise we shared here -
https://www.microsoft.com/security/blog/2021/03/02/hafnium-targeting-exchange-servers/

Microsoft is committed to working with you through this issue. Please let us know if you need additional help.

The current Microsoft agreement expires on July 31, 2021. We will be sending out True-Ups in late April for the August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022 renewal. Purchase Orders will need to be issued by mid-July. The bundle prices will remain the same as last year. Feel free to contact your Bell Techlogix representative with any specific questions that you may have.

For the fourth consecutive year, Gartner named McAfee a Leader in the 2020 Magic Quadrant for Cloud Access Security Brokers and placed McAfee for both ability to execute and completeness of vision. In response to Gartner positioning McAfee in the Leaders quadrant, McAfee Senior Vice President for Cloud Security, Rajiv Gupta said, "McAfee has always offered industry-leading CASB capabilities to help organizations secure their use of cloud and safeguard them from attacks and vulnerabilities of all kinds,"" said Rajiv Gupta, senior vice president of cloud security, McAfee. December 2020

Microsoft:

Some schools still haven't upgraded to Windows 10 or to newer Windows Server versions. The ESU (Extended Security Update) licenses requires that schools buy these licensing keys every year. These keys are good for one year and have to be installed on devices. Even though Year 1 ESU keys may be installed already, schools will need to install Year 2 keys if they still need support. The Year 2 keys are only good through January 11, 2022. Note that schools can't just buy Year 2 keys alone. They will need to have also paid for Year 1 keys to obtain support. The ESU program is a 3 year program altogether which means that Microsoft will stop offering ESU keys after the Year 3 distribution.

January 2020

Microsoft:

Windows 7 support will end on January 14, 2020. If you continue to use Windows 7 after support has ended, your PC will still work, but it will become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses because you will no longer receive software updates, including security updates, from Microsoft. If you have not moved your Windows 7 devices to Windows 10, we recommend you consider virtualization with Windows Virtual Desktop or stand-alone Extended Security Updates. An FAQ document is attached.

For organizations where a virtualization solution might be appropriate, Windows Virtual Desktop is the only cloud-based service that delivers a multi-user Windows 10 experience, optimized for Office 365 ProPlus, and includes free Windows 7 Extended Security Updates. These Extended Security Updates can also be purchased separately for Windows 7 (and Windows Server 2008/R2 and SQL Server 2008/R2) by organizations that require more time to shift to Microsoft 365.

You may purchase Extended Security Updates for Windows 7 as well as Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2007. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like more information.

Microsoft: End of Support for SQL Server and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2

End of Support for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 is July 9, 2019.
End of Support for Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 is January 14, 2020.

What does End of Support mean? Microsoft Lifecycle Policy offers 10 years of support (5 years for Mainstream Support and 5 years for Extended Support) for Business and Developer products (such as SQL Server and Windows Server). As per the policy, after the end of the Extended Support period there will be no patches or security updates, which may cause security and compliance issues, and expose customers' applications and business to serious security risks. What End of Support options are available for SQL Server and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2? We recommend upgrading to the latest versions of our software, leveraging Software Assurance benefits to modernize on-premises or on Azure (i.e. Azure Hybrid Benefit), to help reduce security risks and continue to get regular security updates. However, for customers that are not able to transition before the End of Support date, we are announcing offers to help protect data and applications during the End of Support transition:

Windows and System Center Server is transitioning to the per Core model licensing used for SQL Server (with minor exceptions). Note that this won’t release until the second half of 2016. Below is the basic overview that has been released by Microsoft. Pricing will not be available until 30 days prior to the release. Contact your Bell Techlogix representative for FAQ documents and Datasheets for these titles. These changes to the Windows Server will not impact those institutions that participate in the Core Server Site License. During the MEEC renewal this summer, institutions are encouraged to look at the Core Server Site License to fully license all Windows Servers and the Enterprise Server Site License for System Center prior to these changes.

The Windows Server 2016 licensing model for Standard and Datacenter will be Cores + CAL. The current model is processers + CAL

License all the physical cores in the server. Core licenses will be sold in packs of two.

A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor in the server and a minimum of 16 cores is required to be licensed for servers with one processor. This means 8 two-core packs will be the minimum required to license each physical server.

The price of 16-core licenses of Windows Server 2016 Datacenter and Standard Edition will be same price as the 2 proc license of the corresponding editions of the Windows Server 2012 R2 version.

The two-core pack for each edition is 1/8th the price of a two proc license for corresponding 2012 R2 editions.

Customers with processor licenses with Software Assurance (SA) can upgrade to Windows Server 2016 at no additional cost. At end of the SA term, processor licenses will be exchanged for core licenses and customers can renew their SA on core licenses.

There is also a hybrid Azure/Server benefit that will allow deployment of Windows Server licenses with Software Assurance on Azure coming in Q1 of 2016. More details to be announced later.

The server management licensing of System Center 2016 will move to be based on physical cores. The current model is physical processers. The core based licensing will align with Windows Server 2016 model to provide a consistent licensing metric for managed VMs.

License all the physical cores in the server being managed. Core licenses will be sold in packs of two.

A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor in the server and a minimum of 16 core licenses required for each server. This means 8 two-core packs will be the minimum required to license each physical server under management.

The price of 16 core licenses of System Center 2016 will be same price as the 2 proc license for the corresponding editions of System Center 2012 R2.

The two-core pack for each edition is 1/8th the price of 16 cores for the 2016 editions.

Customers with processor licenses with Software Assurance (SA) can upgrade to System Center 2016 at no additional cost. At end of the SA term, processor licenses will be exchanged for core licenses and customers can renew their SA on core licenses.

All System Center 2016 server management licenses with active Software Assurance qualify for License Mobility through the Software Assurance benefits. Server MLs can be assigned to manage OSEs running in public cloud infrastructure. SA on a Standard Edition license permits management of 2 OSEs and SA on a Datacenter Edition licenses permits management of 10 OSEs in the cloud. Licenses for 16 physical cores will be required for the license mobility SA benefit.
